can you hear it?
Poetry from the Soul
“I heard my grandma voice say, "Lil baby boy, be strong"
That’s when I knew something was wrong
I gotta feelin' my momma was gone
Now tell me is you feelin' me, or do you feel the melody?
Going da-da-da-da-da-da, a-da-da-da-da-daa”—Let Me Take Y’all Way Back by Rome G
There’s a melody that plays in the distance. A song of wisdom, of love, of grief. I’ve heard people sing about it, refer to it, write about it—but I never heard it myself. Not at first, but one day I did, and it changed my life.
It wasn’t something to be heard, it was something to be felt. It was the song that came from within us, the one that played behind the bounds of time. It was always there—playing, longing, waiting. We all hear it at one time or another. It happens differently for everyone, and most of the time it happens in the silence that embraces you after your tears. The bellowing scream that echoes within the room breaks the door to this melody that needed a moment to soothe you, to hold you, to mourn with you. It tiptoes quietly from the silence into the overwhelmed mind and clears its throat before beginning.
Its notes begin before they make a sound.
Many cannot hear them.
They play for the grieving,
the mourning,
the ones in the depths of sorrow.
It plays for everyone,
but only those who sank into the silence could hear it.
The ones who had wept,
fallen numb,
and waited for more than the sound of their own breath.
Then it came—
it swept them up into an embrace.
The melody,
the music,
the song.
The tune of life reaching the edge,
where the crowds no longer made a sound,
where people no longer stood by you,
where you no longer had the strength to listen.
The music came for those who needed it.
It melted into their empty hearts.
filling the silent void,
warming the chilling air.
Can you hear it?
Can you hear the melody of life?
Of pain deeper than heartbreak?
Of depth beyond your cheerful laugh?
Of beauty that outlives suffering?
The music plays and hasn’t stopped.
It never asks to be heard.
But if you hear it—
let it play.
It’s your turn.

This feels like discovering the melody has always been inside you. Beautifully written.
This was deep. Reflects the hardship of grief. I've lost both of my parents so it hit home for me. Pleasure reading it. So glad to be off Facebook and onto something with substance.
